Coffee Table Styling With Plants

My plant journey has, undoubtedly, been a life changing experience - unexpected, ethereal and emotional. May be someday, I’ll write an entire blog just about that. Fortunately for us, our apartment living room is flooded with gorgeous natural light and beautiful breeze. It makes for a healthy green space. Honestly, I can’t imagine this space without plants. And specially, our coffee table! On some days, I have just a single plant here while on others, I have more than three. Sometimes it’s a mix of plants and a candle or some books or a Buddha. But for sure, there is always a plant on our coffee table.

If your living room receives a good amount of light, why not bless your coffee table with some greens? Plants create a an environment filled with positive vibes, freshness and serenity. And let’s not forget, they are natural decor accents, beautiful ones too. I’ve put together 3 styling ideas for your coffee table that involves plants.

  1. Minimal, earthy, simple

If you’re someone who loves clean and singular decor, this is concept is for you. Choose a plant that isn’t very lush but with larger leaves or, rather, leaves with interesting shapes. I’ve used an Alocasia Amazonica (Alocasia Polly/Elephant Ear) for it’s interesting leaves. Other great house plants you can use for a minimal coffess table decor are a Caladium bicolour (Heart Of Jesus) or a Philodendron Birkin. Both have gorgeous leaves which don’t need any other elements to enhance your table top style!

I’ve paired the Alocasia simplistically with three large pebbles while the planter is in a faded terracotta tone. All of these elements are on a flat white tray. The tray creates a frame for your display bringing in a neat and clean dynamic. . Our living room is entirely in whites and neutrals with a touch of natural earthiness. All of the colours and elements have been chosen to complement the interiors. While choosing the elements for a minimal coffee table decor concept, think of the interiors around it as a backdrop for your show stopper! Use colours, tones and hues accordingly. And think simple.

2. Voluminous and colourful

If you’re someone who likes to fill up spaces, then this is for you. I’ve used a Stromanthe Triostar for a fuller coffee table top. It has long leaves that add volume and it’s naturally purple leaves bring that perfect dash of colour. I’ve mixed in a candle inside a holder with a simple pothos propagation. The candle breaks the monotony of plants, while the simplicity of the pothos complements the vivacious Triostar. All in all, having a voluminous display on your coffee table can also be balanced by using elements that play well with each other.

3. Propagation Station

It’s really simple. If you have good light here, use your coffee table as a platform for your propagation plants. I have used a wooden platter as the base for two propagations - a snake plant and some pothos. I’ve added a little height variation by lifting one of the propagations. This adds a sense of balance to the whole composition. I’ve touched it up with a Buddha head that is rustic and earthy to match with the wooden platter. The joy of watching life and growth while relaxing in the living room sipping on a cup of coffee is unreal. Little pleasures, never take them for granted. Something I’ve learned from the pandemic.
